Angie and Cris' Journey:

How decluttering can actually save or make you money

In the long run decluttering and purging can save you time, which can be money.

You have to buy organizing tools sometimes to organize all the ‘stuff’ you have.  If you purge items, you won’t have to spend money organizing tools or equipment.

The less you have now, the less you have to move if you plan on moving in the future.  If you hire professional movers, the less you have to pay them to move stuff you don’t need.

Recently we started with Carly’s room.  As a little girl, she has so many “little” things.  She likes to collect things like rocks, pictures, and maybe almost like a little hoarder.  Angie sent the kids and hubby away, and tackled cleaning out and organizing her room.  She discarded two kitchen trash bags full, and donated a bunch of books, puzzles, and dress-up clothes.  Angie also reorganized and decluttered the closet in the bathroom.  A lot of toiletries, old medicines, etc. that we could get rid of.

We will create a plan and see what we can accomplish by the end of the year.  We can move on to Blake’s room next, and then our room, followed by the basement and garage.  I think I can sell some of my clothes to a resale shop, donate, or purge all the rest. I know we have things we haven’t used in years, and even some things that have never been used. Maybe a garage sale is in our future? I feel like for our family, if we start with the small things, we will see more progress sooner.  It’s kind of similar to our coach, Melanie’s suggestion on tackling our debt; start with paying off the small amounts sooner so we have less payments.

I also pulled out Thomas the Trains from our train table, and started selling them on eBay.  So far I have made over $50 selling these trains.

We definitely need to commit to these things.  It’s like committing to Project Money; we know by organizing our home, it will benefit our future when it is time to build our new home.
