Emily's Journey:
Splurging and Self-care
Last week I talked a little bit about finding free ways to work on my fitness this summer. That is one of my favorite ways to decompress and relax. My financial coach and I saw I was spending money on fitness clothing (leggings are my fav, duh!), accessories and hair appointments, which are definitely not necessities.
So, how much money do you spend on yourself each month? I mean self-care is important right? I did a couple things this week to help with that extra spending. I have noticed that when I’m bored or watching TV I’ll find myself engulfed in Instagram and then all of a sudden I’m shopping the newest leggings on the Lululemon Instagram feed. I’ve become more aware of that kind of browsing and every time I see something that I may have in the past hit “purchase with Apple Pay” I’ve gone into my notes app on my phone and put it on a list. At the end of the month, I am going to take a look at that list. If it still “sparks joy” (as Marie Kondo says), I can pick one thing to purchase from that list and if it doesn’t, it comes off the list. I think this will be a good way to still splurge every once and a while, but be more conscious on if I really LOVE those leggings or that picture frame for the gallery wall.
Second thing, hair appointments. Who doesn’t love a good chat with your stylist for a couple hours and that good cup of coffee or flavored water!? I went in for my hair appointment last week and decided to change up the schedule a little bit. I decided to get some color that would grow out nicely and only get a haircut next appointment. Then the following appointment I will allow myself to get some highlights, lowlights, whatever I’m feeling that day! I thought this was a great way to still get that self-care in, but still cut back on what I’m currently spending!
Do you have a splurge budget every month? How do you budget for self-care?
