Emily's Journey:
camping weekend
Looking for a fun getaway without spending a ton of money? Try Camping! We headed out to Governor Dodge State Park this past weekend for a trip that cost us under $100.
Here are some tips to keep spending costs low:
- Shop around for campsites! Not all sites at parks are the same price depending on size. We spent $37 for two days out at the camp site.
- Clean out your fridge! You would be surprised at how much food you have that you can cook while camping too. We had some frozen chicken breast, corn on the cob, and spinach that needed to be used up, so we brought all of it for dinner at the campsite and cooked on the grill. We also had some crackers and dip in our cabinet that we used for snacks.
- Bring a skillet! Breakfast was a breeze; we made a premix of scrambled eggs and bought a pack of bacon, which cost $7.68 including some paper plates, napkins and two gallons of water.
- You CAN camp and have your coffee too. We had a French Press we brought along, which we used with our regular everyday coffee grounds. We packed a pot to boil water over the fire, and boom, coffee!
- Most state parks don’t let you carry in fire wood, but it’s reasonably priced at the state park at $5 per bundle. $10 for the entire weekend isn’t bad!
The total cost for our weekend getaway was $54.68. Time to plan one more weekend before the fall season sets in!
