Counting the Cost
Terrance was born and raised in Nashville, Tennessee. He LOVES the south, the weather, the food, and all his family. Myself, born and raised here in Wisconsin. Happy to be a Midwesterner and live with my cheese curds and beer.
We go down south at least twice a year. With Daylen in the picture we find ourselves trying to visit more often. One of our long-term goals when we started was figuring out when we could fly to visit Nashville and when we would drive. Driving isn’t terrible......about 9 hours, HOWEVER that was before Daylen. Now the idea of driving the distance with a 15 month old makes me want to cry. It’s just so looonnnngggg.
We are visiting soon so I started planning out our trip by searching for good flights. Yes! Southwest Airlines! I found tickets non-stop each way for $48 bucks!! What!?!? Total round trip for 2 adults and a baby on non-stop flights with free checked bags $198!!! Book it!! Wait.
Flying out of Milwaukee. Do we take our own car and park it? How much does that cost per day? When we land in Nashville how do we get around? How much is a rental car? What about trip protection insurance? (Cancelled trip to North Carolina anyone?) Gas for the rental car while we are there? It all starts to add up. So what seemed cheap, $198, would actually cost us around $700. Can’t we just go?
We are not there yet. We are not at the financial point where an unplanned financial trip will have little impact on us.
So, we will be driving. It might take us more than 9 hours but the saving feels better than the convenience of flying!
We had to be big picture thinkers! One day we might get to the point where we can travel without care. Until then, we can always dream.
