Sarah's Journey:
Gift Cards and My Food Budget
Who doesn’t like gift cards? I recently received one from my employer for my work anniversary. It was a nice treat and wasn’t something I planned on receiving. I plan on using the money for holiday gift spending.
Gift cards can also be a great way to easily budget your holiday gift giving. If you only have a certain amount to spend on your friends and family, a gift card can help make sure you don’t overspend. Your gift card could come from Amazon or Visa, or it could be from their favorite local shop. Your friend can pick something out they really want and you save money and time. In times of quarantine, you don’t even have to leave home to purchase them. Most places offer online gift cards and they can be personalized with your message.
On another note, my food budget continues to be a problem. I splurged on a meal delivery service and to be honest, it wasn’t worth the money. I’m kicking myself, because I took money out of savings to pay for it and I’m still spending money on ordering out. I need to be more disciplined when it comes to my grocery budget. Sometimes I just can’t resist the convenience of takeout. Maybe I need to accept that food will always be something I need to set aside more money for than I would want.
I also started selling things online. Sadly, no one wants to buy my rug, clothes, plant pots or art. I’ll keep trying but I’m honestly not expecting much to come from selling these items. If they do sell, it will be some lucky extra cash that will help offset the additional money I’ve spent this month on takeout.
