Moriah and Terrance's Journey:

Giving Advice

How much have you saved? How much debt have you paid off!?! And most importantly, how did you do it?!?! What’s the secret???

We hear at least one of these questions weekly. Family, friends, even co-workers everyone wants to know the secret. So here it is.........there is no secret.

We didn’t win the lottery or get raises at work. Our credit cards didn’t fall to zero balance because we are in a contest and they wanted to help us out (although we wouldn’t turn them down).

So what have we been doing? How can anyone learn from our experience to help themselves?

Here are our top three tips.

  1. Baby steps. You can’t do it all at once so we didn’t try to. We kept it simple and focused on one goal at a time because that’s what worked for us.
  2. Keep ALL your receipts and track EVERYTHING for one month. If you do this, when you go through your receipts at the end of the month you WILL be surprised to see where all your money is going. You THINK you know, but do you really? This one action kept us on tract. And we will continue to use this to check ourselves.
  3. Just because you can doesn’t mean you should. Have you ever spent money on something because it was a good deal but then never used it? We have. Both of us. More times than we want to admit. This takes discipline and an inner voice reminding us what are big picture goal is.

No secrets. No surprises. No unexpected windfall of money or luck. Just hard work, determination, and patience.

There will be setbacks. And failures. But we are doing it and so can you.
