Emily's Journey:

How Social Media is helping me Budget

Last week I talked about how I went over budget last month and how stressful it was for me. Not only did the dogs create extra expenses but after reflecting and reviewing my spending for the month, there was more to it.

Have you ever fallen victim to an impulse Instagram purchase? Or find yourself trying to keep up with the Jones’ and that new beautiful sectional they posted on their Instagram feed? Same. This week, I decided to do an Instagram detox. I unfollowed all of the people who make me feel like the couch in my living room isn’t pretty enough, those influencers who make you think you need eight white sweaters this fall and all the feeds that made me feel plain crummy about all the things I have and should be grateful for.

Not only did I unfollow all of those accounts making me feel pressured to buy the next best thing, but I replaced them with accounts that are also working on becoming debt free and building wealth! This month, I am doing a 15 day no-spend challenge with one of the Instagram accounts I follow. This means that you go 15 days in the month of October without spending money on anything that is not essential (groceries, dog food, bills and transportation for me).

Here are some of my favorite Instagram accounts to follow that are keeping me motivated this month:

@summitcreditunion

@accordingtomycalculation

@thefinancialdiet

@daveramsey

@thatdebtfreelife

If you are struggling with budgeting motivation this month, go check these accounts out. They are sure to give you some inspiration!
