Emily and Ginger's Journey:
The Pantry Challenge
This week we are challenging ourselves to eat only foods that we already have in our house and skip a week of grocery shopping. We were inspired to do this when we were driving home late Sunday afternoon after visiting family out of state. We had a packed weekend full of fun and we were tired out. The last thing we wanted to do when we got home was go to the grocery store like we normally do on Sundays. We were very tempted to order some takeout, but then we thought about how much food we already have at home. Looking at the fridge and the closet can feel the same sometimes. You open it up and even though it is full of food or clothes, all you can think is, "I have nothing to eat or wear!"
The reality is, we just went to Costco last weekend and have a deep freezer filled with frozen meat and some goods from the garden. We have multiple shelves of dried beans and grains. Even if some of our go-to foods are running low or out, there are so many options available if we get a little creative. This challenge has taken our quest to redefine needs versus wants to a whole new level. We were excited when we were able to come up with enough meals for the week using food we already have. This is a great strategy for saving money and time! Grocery shopping done from our car this past Sunday without even having to go to the store! Yes!
