Angie and Cris' Journey:
swim season in full effect for Blake!
This past weekend we opted for our family to travel to an away swim meet in Oshkosh for Blake. We were also able to have our wonderful niece, who is attending UW-Oshkosh, visit with us for the weekend and watch her little cousin swim.
The meet we attended in Oshkosh is a yearly event which provides youth swimmers inspiration, motivation and role models who have become champions of the sport of swimming. Each champion started just like these youth swimmers and demonstrates it is possible to achieve great things from similar beginnings. The champions at this year’s event were Justin Wright and Conner McHugh. Justin Wright is a National Champion in the 200 Butterfly, and is ranked 6th in the world. Conner McHugh is a college two time, first-team All-American. This meet is to focus on ALL swimmers, no matter what age or level. It's about encouraging each swimmer to move forward and take a step in the right direction. It's not about being the best or getting first place, it's about motivating our swimmers to reach their personal best.
It is a three-day event, where we entered Blake to participate on both Saturday and Sunday morning. Aside from the costs of the trip, it provides Blake the opportunity to swim with competition from all over the state and also to watch and meet the two champions.
Luckily, Angie works for the hospitality industry and is able to obtain discounted hotel rooms with free breakfast for travel, and that help cut some of the costs. The swim meet itself costs money, gas for getting to Oshkosh, as well as eating out, but certainly the experiences are definitely worth it. Watching the two champions swim with the young kids is definitely inspirational for both the parents and the young swimmer athletes.
Blake had a great weekend at the meet, and participated in six events. Out of the six events, he achieved a personal best in four of the six events. The best one was the 100-yard freestyle, where he was shy of cutting seven seconds off his personal best! He’s looking forward to his next meets in December to cut some more time!
