Megan and Scott's Journey:

WE’RE TRYING A NEW THING

And for lack of better words, we’re calling it Sober September!

A few weeks back we thought “Shoot... we’re going through a lot of soda. We’re spending a handful of our grocery budget on adult beverages to complement our meals and MLB/NFL game-watching!”

Thus, Sober September was born.

This actually might be a thing already? I’m sure if we google-d it, we could find that someone has coined the idea. Anyhow, it’s new to us at least! What we’re doing is spending four weeks eliminating the purchase and consumption of soda and adult beverages. What can we indulge on besides water? Coffee (black or with healthy alternatives for those yummy cafe drinks!), unsweetened iced tea, sparkling water, and juice/milk.

We don’t drink any one of these items in large quantities, but over the course of a month, a few bottles of wine, a couple six packs of our favorite craft brews, and a 12-pack or two of soda (even on sale!) can exceed well over $50!

We figure this plan can work out two-fold:

  • We’re saving some money on items that are not absolutely necessary.
  • We might shed a couple pounds? Maybe?? If anything, at least we’re making better choices for our bodies!

We’re going into this with the idea that it is, in fact, just a trial. If we see some big changes in our health or budget (thanks Money Minder for the budget and goal updates! 80% of our grocery budget is already accounted for this month and I know this via email alerts!), we can make this new “thing,” or a variant of this new thing work. If not, no biggie! Hakuna matata.

Try it with us if you’re curious! Your friends and family will thank you for the safe ride home on those Badger Saturday’s!

Peace, love, and water weight,

Scott + Megan
