How We Cut Our Grocery Bill by Switching to Thrive Market, ALDI, and Metro Market to SAVE BIG
July 2, 2025
>
Emily and Madeline
Let’s be honest: trying to eat clean, whole foods without artificial ingredients can feel like a luxury. You walk into the store with the best intentions—skip the sugary cereal, reach for the organic spinach—and walk out with a smaller haul and a bigger bill.
It’s frustrating, and you’re not alone.
With project money at the forefront of our minds, we decided to do a deep dive into our monthly grocery spending. We had been feeling like our grocery bills had a mind of their own creeping up little by little each month. We are all for healthy food and pantry staples, but when your total starts rivaling your rent (okay, not quite, but still), it’s time to take a MUCH closer look.
Spending time reviewing recent receipts (YIKES) inspired a few major changes that are already saving us money without sacrificing quality.
We connected directly with Thrive Market’s customer service team to find a yearly membership option that worked within our budget. From there, we got intentional with our monthly orders—stocking up on items like dressings, oils, seasonings, pasta sauces, protein bars, and other pantry staples. For fresh items like meat and produce, we started shopping at ALDI, which offered great quality at lower prices. Metro Market became our backup stop—for last-minute dinner ingredients, non-perishables, or specific brands we couldn’t find elsewhere.
By breaking up our grocery shopping, subscribing to staples we use often, and taking advantage of ALDI’s deals, we’ve already noticed a big difference in our spending. We’re no longer dropping $200 per trip, yet we’re still bringing home groceries that support our healthy, additive-free, and diet-friendly lifestyle.
