We can’t believe summer is almost over! Where does the time go?! Speaking of time, there always seems to be less and less of it these days. There’s a constant flow of projects, work, chores, school work, and the list goes on. Because of this, the one thing that we often struggle with is meal planning. Does anyone else think it can be hard to fit meal planning in? If you do, you’re not alone! People struggle with meal planning all the time…then again, it’s hard work. In order to successfully meal plan, you need a groove and, in order to create a groove, you need practice! It’s so easy to say you’re going to meal plan, but turning that intention into a reoccurring habit requires effort, time, and patience.Recently, we fell off the meal planning ‘wagon’ and had to quickly hop back on. Life is too busy not to and it’s way too stressful to just ‘wing it’ over and over again. As a result, we decided to take a complete inventory of everything we had on-hand, with our target areas being the freezer and the pantry. This provided the perfect opportunity to lay everything from the freezer out on the countertops and fully take stock of what was in there. Let me tell you, there were several things we realized had, at some point, gotten shoved to the back and forgotten about until that moment.Overall, the inventory project allowed us to know exactly what we hand at home and how much. Let me tell you, we are set on pasta, pasta sauces, emergency soups, and frozen boneless skinless chicken breast. Oh, and seasoning packets. I feel like we have an entire cabinet shelf full of seasoning packets – chili seasoning, taco seasoning, pasta seasoning, spaetzle, veggie grill packets, you name it, we have it! This project certainly was overwhelming at first but it already seems so much easier to meal plan. Knowing exactly what we have on hand at the current time allows us to quickly pick a direction, make a plan, and prep a meal. A protein, grain, veggie, etc. I’m guessing that knowing our inventory will also reduce unnecessary spending as well as overbuying and stuffing the pantry or freezer. Over the coming weeks, we can share how the project has continued and if we do, indeed, notice how else it’s helped, and maybe share one of our weekly meal prep menus.
