Let’s Talk Savings!

September 27, 2023 Let’s talk saving money. I don’t mean saving money at the grocery store through couponing or using a calculator while shopping. Those are both great ways to help you save money, but what I’m talking about is putting money into a savings account. Saving money has been a challenge for me over the past year or so. I used to be a good saver but somehow, it became more difficult to save as my debt increased. I really struggled to save money, but Project Money has really made me think about how I can do better. Before Project Money, I already had several savings accounts. I found this to be a useful strategy to save money for certain things. I have several accounts to save for special things like my camper or travel but I also have one main savings account. I have found it helpful to set up automatic deposits into those accounts the day I get paid. Summit does offer another type of saving account, called a GoSave account, which I love. We have it set to put a certain dollar amount in this account each paycheck automatically every time I get paid. It is also a little harder to remove money from this savings account which I like as it keeps me from overspending and most days, I just pretend that I don’t even see it. I have adapted a new mentality of trying to save money and every payday, I make it a habit to pay myself first before I pay any other bills.I found having several savings accounts to be crucial to my success in Project Money. Setting up an auto deposit each paycheck is one of the most useful things I’ve learned since I started this process. I know it sounds simple, and I truthfully wish I would have started doing it a lot sooner, but better late than never.
