Calculate Insurance Needs
This month marks the start or our open enrollment period at both our employers, which helps serve as a reminder to check in and ensure that we are utilizing the benefits provided by our employers. The first of which is the wellness initiative through my employer, who’s deadline for submission of the annual incentive program happens to be right in the middle of open enrollment and seems to have crept up on us this year. The program is through my employer and offers a Visa gift card for the employee (and spouse) if the fulfill certain criteria – our program has three separate requirements. The first involves an on-line health assessment, which poses number of questions related to physical health, mental health and financial health. Upon completion of the assessment a report is generated which provides some recommendations for various actions that could be taken based on the responses, as well as resources available to assist. It also provides a numerical value based upon the responses – and why I find that helpful is that it compares against your previous assessment data, so I know how I am trending year over year, as well as broad comparison against the average person within a specific peer group. The second involves a health check, which would be any one of several things. There is a biometric screening option, which has several different ways to accomplish: Employer on-site event, self-collection kit for an at-home test, or a from that a health care provider fills out. Reporting a dental cleaning also satisfies this requirement. And the final option would be to participate in a coaching session with a health and wellness coach. The third involves participation in a well-being activity. Again, there are several different options available to satisfy this requirement, from health and wellness coaching sessions, health and wellness planning, various “challenges”, and listening to various podcasts – which have a wide variety of topics available. I typically enjoy the podcasts; with the topics I chose this year being climate change and nutrition & immunity. Our family stays routine on medical and dental checkups, so we are meeting the second requirement regardless – so for our time invested in the first and third requirements it ends up being a no-brainer for us, and a welcome additional few hundred dollars. The first step is knowing what benefits are available to you, and then you can begin to utilize them.
