Bills used to be a lot easier to ignore, but of course ignoring them was not the right thing to do long term. For instance, the water bill, which arrives in our mailbox on a quarterly basis, always seems to show up when we are least prepared for it. Last quarter, I misplaced the bill, and it was out of sight and out of mind, so it was paid late.To mitigate this, I switched to electronic billing so that all of our utility bills would be sent by email and I could easily keep track of them. This would have worked well except the next month's email ended up in my junk mail, and I still paid the bill late! We have come so far with keeping our bills paid on time, and I felt so frustrated when I realized that this bill was not only late, but the delinquent portion must be paid by the middle of November or the balance due will be applied to our property tax bill. We had to take a look at our finances and make sure that we could comfortably afford to pay the bill over the next couple of weeks in order to avoid an escrow shortage, and then we promptly paid half of the balance. What is really interesting about all of this is that when we met with our financial coach, Jess, last weekend, she asked us about the water and energy bills and how they were going. We continue to be thankful for our coach and this project holding us accountable so that we can build better financial habits over time.We are not going to gloss over this and say that it has all been easy. Sometimes, it has been frustrating and less than glamorous. Thankfully, over time, we are experiencing much more success by taking care of financial obligations as soon as possible and not ignoring them. Today, we are taking a deep breath and trusting the process… and paying our bills! Have a great week!~K&T
