Smart Shopper

July 31, 2024 This month was all about tracking. We used our daily tracking tool religiously, and it revealed a lot about our habits. We always assumed our weekly grocery bill was between $200-$250, but we failed to factor in those quick trips to the store for missing ingredients or non-essentials like snacks. By the second week of tracking, we quickly realized how these extra trips added up.After discussing this with our financial coach, we decided to go back to basics with meal planning and prepping. Determined to stay on track, we challenged ourselves to stick to the plan despite already being over budget by week two. We sat down and planned out our meals for breakfast, lunch, dinner and even snacks! With our spelled-out grocery list, we headed to the stores, hunting for coupons and checking the discounted sections to save wherever we could. Planning was crucial to having a successful week. Immediately, we noticed our categories for dining out, snacks/vending and groceries dwindling down in entries and dollars! This felt like a great accomplishment because we tackled a challenge that initially felt like a defeat because we were at budget sooner than expected. We learned the importance of setting aside time for meal planning rather than rushing to fill the fridge without a plan. We also learned to be more realistic with our budget setting. Now that we have a full month of what is considered our daily spending, we can budget better.Inspired by our progress, we shared the with a few family members. While there are many tools available to help with budgeting, the real game-changer is the effort and focus on changing our behavior.
