Why We’re Opting for a Potluck This Year

November 20, 2024 Thanksgiving is a time for gratitude, family and of course, a feast. But let’s be honest, hosting a traditional Thanksgiving can come with a hefty price tag. From the turkey to all the sides, desserts, drinks and decorations, the costs can quickly pile up. This year, instead of taking on the financial (and emotional) burden of hosting solo, we’ve decided to do something different: a potluck-style Thanksgiving.Over the past year, my spouse and I (Je’Lisa) have been more intentional about saving money and changing our spending habits. From volunteering at a football concession stand instead of dining out to cutting unnecessary expenses on trips, we’ve seen the benefits of small changes adding up. When it came time to plan Thanksgiving, we realized hosting the traditional way didn’t align with our new approach.Hosting can be rewarding, but it’s also expensive and stressful. By inviting family and friends to contribute a dish, we’re not only lightening the load on our wallets but also creating a more inclusive celebration where everyone gets to share their favorite recipe or tradition. Not only are we cutting down on food expenses, but a potluck also reduces hidden costs like energy bills from cooking all day or the temptation to splurge on fancy serving dishes. It’s a win-win for our budget and stress levels. This potluck Thanksgiving feels like a step in the right direction for us—less financial strain, more focus on what matters. Who knows? It might even become a new tradition. If you’re looking for ways to make the holidays less stressful and more meaningful, I can’t recommend a potluck enough. It’s proof that sometimes less really is more.
