When Life Gets Busy, the Small Choices Still Count

October 21, 2026 I’ll be honest, this past month has been a lot. I travel a lot for work, and when I hit a heavy travel stretch, everything at home kind of goes on autopilot and tiny expenses can add up. I’ll admit it feels a little daunting to refocus. But here’s the good thing: I haven’t actually slipped up! I haven’t gone off the rails or undone any of the work I’ve put in. It just feels like I’m running in place but I’m realizing maybe that’s just what real life looks like. Progress isn’t always big and exciting. Sometimes it’s just holding the line, and I need to be proud I’m not slipping backwards. That’s where Halloween comes in. I wanted to be Coraline this year. And old me would have bought the full costume, every piece, exactly right. This year I stopped and asked myself what I actually needed. The answer? A blue wig and a yellow raincoat. That’s it. Everything else I could make work with what I already have. Will I look exactly like Coraline? Probably not. But anyone who sees that blue hair and yellow coat is going to know who I am, and I saved money doing it!That’s kind of how I’m trying to think about all this right now. I don’t need to get it perfect. I just need to get it close enough by continuing to make small choices that work in my favor and keep my eye on the bigger picture. So, I’m recalibrating. For my next travel stretch, I’m going to keep a travel bag packed with the basics so I’m not buying hairspray in an airport again. When I know I’ll be gone most of the week, I’ll pick up a few easy things for my one day home instead of defaulting to takeout. Small stuff, but small stuff is what got me here in the first place, so small stuff can help get me back on track too.Plus, the big changes I’ve made this year, the ones that are going to last, are still working even when I’m busy. That’s the whole point of setting things up the right way! And on the days where life gets loud, I can still choose the blue wig and the yellow raincoat instead of the whole costume. Good enough is still progress!
