The Good, The Bad, And The Downright Depressing…

July 5, 2023 This week, we uploaded our financial accounts into Climbr, which is Summit’s budgeting tool.  We really liked the ease and speed of getting all our bank transactions downloaded into this platform and appreciate seeing all of our financial information in one place. We have tried budgeting before but only by using spreadsheets that had to have information entered manually.  The automatic linking and uploading of transactions will really help us stay consistent with visibility into our spending habits. A result of the Climbr experience has been the solemn feelings that result from taking such a real, hard look at how we have spent our money. As we have said before, we know that we have been overspending on groceries and dining out. Climbr’s analyzer tool showed us that over the past 6 months, groceries accounted for 10% of our overall spending and we spent even more on dining out, which was 11%. Now, if ‘dining out’ meant that we frequent gourmet restaurants and eat steak every day, 11% of our spending might bring value to our lives!  However, eating fast food and gas station food for the convenience and seeing it add up to the amount Climbr shows is downright depressing. We are not feeling too good about the numbers we’re seeing on Climbr, but as we said in our post last week, the first step is awareness! While seeing the numbers has been a reality check and a bit hard to face, we are excited about the goal-setting feature in Climbr. We set up three goals this week that will help us improve our financial habits and get us excited about spending money on things that bring value. For example, we now have the goal to reduce our dining out spending by $200 in July and to start saving for a vacation that we plan to take this fall. A much-needed getaway sure sounds a lot better than daily gas station stops! We are thankful that Summit offers the Climbr budgeting tool even if the numbers are initially hard to look at. We can’t wait to feel the success that comes with working on our financial goals over the next few months.See you next week!K&T
