Calculate Insurance Needs
Ah, week two... this week has been a financial rollercoaster. We are now feeling the pressure of getting our finances in order and taking action to improve. However, this process has already been more of an emotional experience than we expected. The act of spending less, paying down debt and saving money is a challenge right now as we prepare for our daughter’s high school graduation party. This is one of those events in life that you don’t get to do twice, and we want to get it right. Did you ever notice how events like these can easily get out of hand and throw a wrench in your financial goals? We started planning months ago and secured the venue rental back in December. We thought it was all very manageable since our daughter prefers a small gathering of about 40 people. However, some of the details are more expensive than we first anticipated. For example, I splurged a bit on the décor since creating the right atmosphere is important to me. I shopped the craft store sales, and I’m happy with the centerpieces that I designed for each table. For our daughter, the food is the most important aspect of the party, and she requested catering from a sandwich shop and a two-tier specialty cake. For the rest of the food, I asked some key family members to make and bring items such as pasta and fruit salad, which will help us spend a bit less. We feel that the party is planned pretty well at this point, but that did not stop me from feeling a bit panicky this morning when I woke up realizing that it is only a week away. With some reflection, I believe this is due to the lack of setting a party budget. Once again, I feel us ‘bleeding out’ with many small purchases adding up to an unknown amount of total money spent. I would like to feel good about every aspect of the party and know that our finances are solid because we set aside a set amount of money for it, and we stayed within budget. To make this goal a reality, Travis and I would like to work with our Project Money coach to come up with a plan for big events like this in the future to eliminate some of the financial anxieties that occur during emotional moments in life such as our daughter’s graduation. Looking forward to next week, we believe that this is going to be a fabulous party, and we are so excited to honor our daughter and all of her achievements. After the party dust settles, it will be a great time for Travis and me to sit down with our coach to create a family budget and get started on this path to financial discipline. With all the life changes occurring in our family right now, a little discipline and financial constraint may be just what we need! Stay tuned!
