Life Happens!

August 9, 2023 This week I (Kelly) took an unexpected trip to the Emergency Room and while I was in major pain, the thing that kept going through my mind was, “How much is this all going to cost?” Before Project Money, I would have accepted whatever treatment the ER doctor prescribed. This time, I asked questions such as why a CAT scan was necessary instead of an ultrasound. I also thought twice before accepting a second dose of pain medicine as all I could see was dollar signs! Fortunately, at the start of the new insurance plan year on July 1, I switched from a high-deductible health plan to my company’s standard plan. Although the standard plan is a bit more expensive each pay period, I am hoping that I won’t pay as much out of pocket for this recent ER visit. I also plan to take advantage of the no interest payment plan that hospitals offer. I certainly did not want this roadblock to impact my savings and lowering debt, but these things happen when you least expect them! While I was dealing with my medical emergency back at home, Travis was doing all that he could to minimize his road food spend. He only took a set amount of cash on the road with him so when he saw a shirt that he wanted to buy, he knew that if he used some of his cash, it would mean less money for food. Can you believe that he made it work? Saving on the road has not been the way of things but he came home with the shirt and money still in his pocket, so I’d say that he did pretty well! He also made sure to pack more food this week so he wouldn’t have to spend as much cash on the road. Travis and I are both feeling good about the small changes that we have made, and they are really adding up as we finish week nine.Looking into next week, we have our son’s birthday coming up and we have set a budget for what we would like to spend on his birthday gift, cake, decorations, etc. This will be the first birthday that we have had to plan for since starting Project Money so we are interested to see how this will play out. With three more birthdays in the next couple of months, we will need to get this birthday spending figured out. We have faced challenges like this before and we know that if we put our minds to it, we can do anything.Until next week!
