From Paris To Campus

August 23, 2023 This week, we have been reflecting on something important – where we have BEEN. Do you notice that when starting something new, it is so easy to look back and degrade your past choices? For us, we are wondering why it took us so long to really dig in and make the changes that will lead us closer to financial freedom. We started to get trapped in the cycle of asking why we weren’t smart enough, responsible enough, quick enough, etc. After some reflection and exploring of this idea, we realized that we did exactly what we thought was right in those past situations. We did the best that we could at the time, and from that, we are now learning what is important to us in life. For example, we don’t need to do so much away from home, and giving our energy to our house and our family has led us to finding more joy when we do venture out.  We also learned that our children can and have learned from our past ‘mistakes’ because we now have a bit of wisdom to give them concerning financial matters. Our daughter spent the last year working her first job, and we didn’t realize that she was putting most of her paycheck into her savings account. Travis and I spent the money that we earned on things like gas, food and clothing when we had our first jobs in high school. Our parents figured that since we were earning our own money that we could start paying for our expenses, which didn’t leave much to put into savings. Because of this experience, and how it made us feel, we paid for our daughter’s gas and clothing and most of her food even after she started her job. If she wanted something besides those basics, she used her earned money instead of ours. Recently, when she was given the opportunity to take a trip with her aunt and uncle and their family to Paris, France, she was able to say yes! She had enough savings to pay for airfare and her expenses, and she is now in Paris, staying near Notre Dame, getting ready to explore the Eiffel Tower and the catacombs this week. How wonderful that she is learning the value of setting money aside for the things that really matter and bring value to her life! When she gets back from France, she has a week before moving into her college dorm where she will begin her new life as a college freshman. This opportunity would not be possible without her hard work and also our financial contributions.Where we have BEEN has led us to making different choices for our children, which in turn has us excited to see where they GO in this life. This week, we think that we should all give ourselves grace when starting new habits and be thankful for where you have BEEN. The past is the catalyst for figuring out where you want to go in the future. And don’t forget to enjoy the PRESENT!    ~K&T
