Adventure Awaits

July 20, 2022 Earlier this summer, I signed my dog up for a Wisconsin State Parks Scavenger Hunt adventure through our trainer. She does these great events and training challenges as a fun way to create a community and bond with our dogs. I’ve done a few of the challenges before without much success but had a personal goal of visiting 10 new state parks this year so I figured this would help get me on my way. So far, I’ve visited 20 state parks and have created a new challenge of visiting every state park with my dogs this year. The great part about this is other than the cost of my state park sticker and gas, it’s a relatively low-cost activity. On nights when I might go out and grab dinner and (multiple) drinks with friends, I’m getting outside instead. I’ve also been able to rope a lot of my friends into this challenge so we’re able to hang out anyway and split the cost of gas which further reduces the cost. Plus, I’m not spending more money on takeout or anything extra I might grab while I'm out. My dogs also have a great time being able to get out some energy and work on training to be polite on the trails so they’re mentally and physically tired once we get home.Tips for a great state park visit with your pet:
  • Look at the map! What trails are for hiking, biking, pet friendly, etc.?
  • Carry in and carry out. Keep our parks clean by taking your trash (and poo) with you if there’s not a place to put it.
  • Give everyone their space and keep your pet on leash! Just like people, my dogs don’t appreciate strange dogs getting up in their face, even if your dog is friendly. Give people space to pass and respect personal boundaries.
  • Have fun! I recently got rained on out of nowhere while in the middle of the trail. I figured since I was already soaked, I might as well take my time and enjoy it. I let my dogs play in puddles and didn’t think too much about the cleanup that was sure to come.
I’m excited that this challenge has gotten me to explore more of Wisconsin and can’t wait to see what else is out there. What are your favorite free or low-cost activities?
