No Spend September

September 7, 2022 I had a great time completing my “Hike-a-palooza” challenge with my best friend a couple of weeks ago. We did eight state parks in six days hiking a little over 32 miles. It was fun, exhausting, and I love spending time with friends I don’t get to see all the time. The downside was I did end up spending more money than I planned or wanted to.I decided that to get myself back on track, I should cleanse my spending by trying to do a no spend week. The exception was any necessities (bills, gas, etc.) and I just about made it. The only exception was $25 I spent on some agility ring time for Olly to prepare for a trial at the end of the month and paying the boys who mow my lawn. Ring time is extremely hard to come by so even though we won’t practice until the end of September, I knew I needed to grab the slot now. With my lawn, it’s not a needed expense but I had skipped the week while I was gone, the lawn was pretty shaggy, and I’m admittedly very lazy.I successfully made it without spending any other unnecessary funds though, including groceries and gas. I made myself get creative with meals with things I already had and I’m lucky that I live close enough to things in town that I can bike or it’s just a short drive. All week, I kept running into an “oh, I want that” or “oh, I should get that” and each time pausing to remind myself that I wasn’t spending money. I even adjusted plans with friends to make sure they were no cost. Does it matter in the long run that I’ll have to buy groceries and gas in a couple days anyway? Not really. But the extra pause did go a long way in resetting my habit to impulse buy something off Amazon just because it’s so easy to do so.It also gave me some extra time to reevaluate my budget. Unfortunately, I bowed out of my Nashville trip next month since with other plans, it just couldn’t fit in my budget the way I wanted. I still have a lot of fun stuff coming up and I’m thrilled that this journey has already started changing my bad habits into good ones.
