April 5, 2018 Annual financial education challenge awards six Madison students totalMADISON, Wis.— Summit Credit Union announced the winner of its 2018 Project Teen Money program, its annual financial education challenge created by the member-owned cooperative to encourage students to learn about finances. Bridget Thompson, a junior at Madison’s La Follette High School, earned the highest point total this year and received a $2,500 continuing education scholarship from Summit at an award banquet earlier this week.“We created Project Teen Money as an engaging way to help teens learn about sound money management from their most trusted source – their peers,” said Summit Credit Union CEO & President Kim Sponem. “Through their interactive video and social media content, it was great to see these students discuss smart spending and saving and how to give back to the community.”Wrapping up its fifth year, Project Teen Money features two students from Madison’s East, La Follette and Memorial high schools inspiring their peers around the importance of financial education. Participants use their creative skills by creating videos that educate fellow students about taking a thoughtful approach to giving, saving and spending their money.Over the past few months, the 30- to 90-second videos were published on Summit’s website with students’ families, classmates and community members voting for their favorite. Overall, points were awarded for timeliness, accuracy, originality and creativity.Thompson will be a senior next year, graduating in May of 2019. “I find it very inspiring that a local credit union cares this much about Madison-area students,” said Thompson. “I can’t wait to use this scholarship from Summit to pursue some of my passions in life.”Along with Thompson receiving a $2,500 scholarship, the other five Project Teen Money participants received a $500 scholarship from Summit Credit Union.
